Inquiry into SARS adjourned until Monday

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The inquiry into tax administration and governance issues at SARS has adjourned until Monday when Judge Robert Nugent will rule in Pretoria on whether the the inquiry be suspended – as demanded by suspended SARS boss Tom Moyane.

Moyane’s lawyer Dali Mpofu argued that the inquiry should not be taking place ahead of Moyane’s disciplinary hearing at SARS.

Judge Nugent is expected to rule on Moyane’s submissions on Monday. He says the public hearings are expected to resume in August pending more investigations into the tax administration and governance issues at SARS.

“That is the end of this session of the public hearings. It’s probable that early August there will be more hearings and perhaps longer after one has done a lot more investigation that is required, before deciding what should be held in public. Thank you very much.”

Earlier, Advocate Dali Mpofu says the Inquiry and the disciplinary process against his client – suspended South African Revenue Service (SARS) boss – Tom Moyane is a double attack by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

He says this indicates an abuse of power by the President.

Mpofu has appeared before the SARS Inquiry in Pretoria.  He says the proceedings are unfair and a violation of his client’s rights.

Meanwhile, suspended SARS Commissioner has presented the SARS Inquiry with a memory stick which he claims contains recording which can prove the existence of the so called ‘rogue unit’.

Mpofu says it has been unfair to cast doubt on Advocate Muzi Skhakhane’s report which says that SARS operated a covert unit that illegally spied on tax payers.

Commissioner, Judge Robert Nugent did not accept the stick, saying it was not relevant to the day’s proceedings.
