June marks 125 years since the fateful train incident, when Mahatma Gandhi was evicted from a first class train coach because of the colour of his skin.

Ghandi was travelling from Durban to Pretoria on June 7, 1893.

The commemoration, “One Night that changed the world”, will be celebrated in India, South Africa and other parts of the world where there are Indian communities.

Consul General of India in Johannesburg, Dr KJ Srinivasa says, “After Mahatma Gandhi was literally thrown out of the train at Pietermaritzburg station, Gandhi made a decision to fight against oppression, against segregation, against the injustices.”
