Independent panel to be appointed to probe racism allegations at Grosvenor High in Durban

Reading Time: 2 minutes

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu says they will appoint an independent panel to investigate allegations of racism that have been levelled against the staff at Grosvenor Girls’ High School in Durban’s Bluff.

Mshengu has met the management of the school and the school governing body about these allegations.

This comes after black learners embarked on a strike and placard protest last Thursday.

Learners say they are being called black monkeys, sluts and taxi queens.

They say they are not allowed to have Afro hairstyles, although it is not expressly forbidden in the school rules.

They also demand the removal of the principal.

Mshengu says they will act on the findings and recommendations of the panel.

He says, “We have appointed an independent panel, by the end of this week, they should have given that and there are issues that need to be investigated by that panel, in relation to financial irregularities or alleged financial irregularities. That panel should be appointed or will be appointed by the end of this week, with the clear intention that by next week they must start by doing their work.”

Meanwhile, chaos erupted at the school as parents are demanding to speak to Mshengu.
