Reserve Bank independence not under threat: Kganyago

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago has been confronted by questions about the Reserve Bank’s independence among a host of issues being addressed at the SA Tomorrow Investor Conference in New York.

The Governor is among the leadership of a South African business and government delegation speaking to investors as part of a five-city, four country road show.

“The key strength of SA is the strength of its institutions and the question then came about the independence of the SA Reserve Bank and whether it is under threat and my straight message is that the independence of the Reserve Bank is not under threat because the RB independence is entrenched in the Constitution of the Republic of SA, but importantly that the independence of the Reserve Bank was captured in the original constitutional principles which means that if there is an amendment on the Constitution that amendment must still be certified by the Constitutional Court and if it is inconsistent with those original constitutional principles, it is not going to pass constitutional muster.”
