Reading Time: < 1 minute

The inaugural council sitting of the Vhembe District Municipality in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, has collapsed. The ANC councillors requested for an adjournment as they were divided on the mayoral nominees.

Some ANC councillors are in favour of the former District Executive Mayor Dowelani Nenguda while the other faction wants the former Musina mayor, Mihloti Muhlophe, to be elected as a mayor.

The municipal manager adjourned the sitting.

During the adjournment, the councillors received text messages indicating that the sitting has been postponed until further notice.

The sitting was halfway through the taking of oaths by elected councillors from all political parties, opposition parties tried to prevent the adjournment but the municipal manager granted the request from the ANC.

Minutes later after adjournment, councillors received SMS’s from the municipal manager saying the sitting has been adjourned until further notice.

Word on the ground is that the ANC is divided over who should take over as mayor between the former District Mayor Dowelani Nenguda and former mayor of Musina local municipality Mihloti Muhlophe.
