Reading Time: 2 minutes

SABC’s IsiNdebele radio station, Ikwekwezi FM has celebrated its 35th birthday in a glittering ceremony at Solomon Mahlangu stadium in Kwa-Mhlanga in Mpumalanga.

Ikwekwezi FM went on air for the first time on April 1 1983. It’s one of what was then known as a vernacular bantu broadcast service.

Loyal listeners of the station had come out in numbers to celebrate with their favourite radio personalities. The celebration is expected to continue throughout the night with station’s DJs, various top DJs such as Metro FM’s Mo Flava and artists such as Kwesta, Dr Moruti and Rhythmic element are expected to entertain revellers.

Mpumalanga MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Speedy Mashilo, who was among revelers, say Ikwekwezi FM is an important platform to inform the people.

“Over a period of time we’ve used Ikwekwezi. We’ve worked with Ikwekwezi. So today we are quite happy that they are 35. We wish them 35 years to come so that our children and our great grandchildren must learn from Ikwekwezi as they transmit the good news, the message, the information to the community of Mpumalanga in general and the people of South Africa as a whole. So good luck for their event.”
