Scores of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporter’s young and old have gathered at Pholani Sports Ground in Lindelani north of Durban ahead of their party’s Freedom Day celebrations.

IFP leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi is expected deliver a keynote address. Lindelani is known as one of IFP’s strong holds.

The supporters clad in their party traditional colours with t-shirts bearing the face of their leader Buthelezi are singing songs, saying come 2019 they will win elections in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police have been deployed to monitor the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has condemned what he calls deeply rooted racial tensions in the country.

He was speaking at the party’s Freedom Day rally in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria. He was reacting to recent attacks against Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

Lesufi has been criticised over moves to introduce dual language policies at schools to ensure language is not used to bar black pupils from attending certain schools.

An effigy of Lesufi was hanged outside his office on Wednesday by two white men, sparking public outrage. Maimane has urged the country to unite against racism.
