Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporters in Durban are celebrating the party’s victory in being voted in as the new, official opposition party in KwaZulu-Natal, toppling the Democratic Alliance (DA).

The party received more than 16% of the votes in the province which amounts to more than half a million votes.

This is almost a six-percentage point increase in support from the 2014 national election.

One of the party’s strongholds, the Dalton Men’s Hostel, dedicated the entire weekend to the IFP’s victory.

“We are very happy about the outcome of the result, especially in KZN. Our plan was not to reach position 1 but to increase the number which we have done 100%. This means that the following election we will fight for position number one,” says Mthembiseni Thusi, IFP Spokesperson.
