IEC yet to decide on Mtubatuba by-election

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in KwaZulu-Natal is yet to declare last week’s Mtubatuba by-election in KwaZulu-Natal free and fair.

The commission released the results, with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) taking the seat from the African National Congress (ANC) which it won in 2016.

The results are however being disputed by the ANC.

The IEC confirmed that it’s investigating intimidation of voters among other things.

On the eve of the election, the ANC sought a court interdict to stop the election, alleging that 200 names on the voters’ list belonged to people who didn’t live in the Ward. However, the ANC’s application failed.

And though the election went ahead, the ANC raised concern that the process wasn’t free and fair.

“The IEC is investigating following the complaint lodged by the ANC on the fairness of process and reports of intimidation of voters and infringement of electoral rules. A decision will then have to be made by the court,” says the IEC’s provincial electoral officer Mawethu Mosery.
