The  Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has encouraged eligible voters to go online and register or update their details.

It says the online system has received more than 200 000 applications since Thursday.

This weekend is the last chance for South Africans to register to vote and check their voter registration status ahead of the November local government elections.

Over 23 000 voters’ registration stations around the country have been opened from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday. The stations will also be opened on Sunday.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo says they are expecting over 2 million people to register or update their details this weekend.

“We urge everybody to take advantage of it. Online will close at midnight on Monday. It’s a legal imperative. The voters roll closes on the date on which an election is called. In other words, for the purpose of that election, you are unable to register beyond the proclamation date,” says Mamabolo.
