According to the Constitution the election should be held between May 8 and August 7.

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson Vuma Mashinini says they will not rest until they meet their obligations and commitments of delivering a free, fair and credible election.

The Commission was briefing the oversight committee on Home Affairs on its readiness for next year’s general election.

According to the Constitution the election should be held between May 8 and August 7. President Cyril Ramaphosa will decide the date in consultation with the Commission.

Mashinini says they understand that next year’s election will be robustly contested.

“As we have seen as our democracy is maturing that it would be a contested and robustly contested election and we hope that we should also be able not to let down and ensure that all the systems, competences and the proficiency that are commensurate with the responsibility will be carried out by us.”
