The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will on Tuesday and Wednesday, be conducting voter registrations among inmates in all South Africa’s prisons.

The last national voter registration will be held this coming Saturday and Sunday.

In preparation for this, the Electoral Commission has appealed to family members in possession of offenders’ ID documents to make arrangements to have delivered them to the correctional facility by Monday.

There are approximately 160 000 offenders including remand detainees in South Africa’s 240 prisons.

“Between the department of correctional services and the electoral commission arrangements have been made. We have made voter education sessions in the prisons so we have distributed the information that prisoners need to know. We have made a call out to their families to bring their ID documents. So we have done everything we needed to do to allow the prisoners to register,” explains Sy Mamabolo who is the Chief Electoral Officer.
