IEC to compile election timetable

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will compile an election time-table as soon as President Jacob Zuma proclaims the final election date in the Government Gazette.

This comes after the IEC surpassed its target to register 2 million new voters by 17%. The IEC says the election time-table will include the date on which political parties will be able to submit their candidates’ lists.

IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela says their biggest task is to put together the timetable.

“In that timetable, one of the key features will be a date by which political parties will submit their candidate lists. This is always one of the key dates because immediately after that we would already be knowing which are the political parties that will be signing the electoral code of conduct.”

Meanwhile, IEC chairperson, Pansy Tlakula, told reporters in Pretoria that a total of 339,728 new registrations were recorded in Gauteng in the past voters registration weekend. She further says “The IEC has raised security fears with the police and political parties ahead of the general elections in May.”

A total of 1.1 million people registered for the first time during the first registration weekend in November 2013. With the 1.2 million who registered this past weekend a total of 2.3 million voters would be added to the roll. Almost 3 million people visited 22,263 voting stations over the past weekend.
