IEC set to implement Concourt ruling regarding addresses

The IEC says it has put in place new mechanisms to ensure that people from informal settlements without formal addresses are accommodated.

This is in response to a Constitutional Court ruling. According to the June 2016 ruling, the IEC must have a record of addresses for all registered voters.

Briefing the media in Pretoria, the IEC’s Chief Executive Officer Sy Mamabolo says all informal settlement voters will be afforded a chance to vote.

Mamabolo says new methods entail filling in the form in which the voter explains the area in which they live.

“We have a form that we give to people who don’t have addresses and then they describe on the form the precise point where they live and our understanding is that that is sufficient for purposes of placing a person in the correct voting district segment and it does meet the legal test.”
