IEC, political parties to sign electoral code of conduct pledge

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and leaders of political parties will sign an electoral code of conduct pledge at Nasrec in Johannesburg shortly.

The political parties who have registered to contest the 2021 local government elections pledge to abide by all rules and regulations that the IEC has set out.

The signing ceremony is in compliance with the Electoral Act, which requires political parties to publicly commit to upholding the provisions and the purpose of the code of conduct ahead of the local elections.

Electoral Code of Conduct pledge for 2021 Municipal Elections:

In September, the IEC noted with concern the conduct of some African National Congress (ANC) members at one of the commission’s registration centres at Kwa-Dambuza in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.

Some ANC members were seen trying to block Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema from entering the station and monitoring the voters’ registration process.

The conduct was decried by both Malema and ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa.
