Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) at Kuruman in the Northern Cape hope they will reach 50% mark of the special votes by the end of the two days set aside for special voting.

The IEC’s regional coordinator Peter Kgobe says despite the slow pace at which the voting started, he is optimistic things will improve.

“Special votes went well, 132 voting stations have opened on time. All staff reported for duty and things are going well even if they are not too satisfactory. We not yet at 50% but I hope that we still have tomorrow. We might go up to 100%.”

The IEC’s Umgungundlovu District in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands says they have managed to complete about 70% of their special votes. There are over 9000 voters who had applied for special votes in the district.

“We can safely say we have done more than 70 percent on both categories the voting station visit and home visits the day started very well with no challenges no glitches reported all voting stations throughout the district managed to open on time now I can indicate that most voting stations have closed with a few that will be finishing tomorrow but it went very well,” says The IEC’s Khulekani Mdadane.
