The Electoral Commission (IEC) in Gauteng says it has received five so-called section 55 complaints from political parties.

These are complaints under section 55 of the Electoral Act could include complaints of alleged irregularities by the IEC.

These objections are directed to the Electoral Commission for adjudication.

But if the complainants are aggrieved by the decision of the Electoral Commission they are free to appeal the outcomes to the Electoral court.

Acting Gauteng Electoral commission official Thabo Masemola says of the complaints received are from parties such as the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and African Democratic Change (ADeC).

“I have been notified by our legal department that there are about five such cases of section 55. I am yet to receive full information on those cases so that we can follow up.  But we will be able to expeditiously deal with those cases and file a report and allow the commissioners to determine those cases and make their decisions known.”
