The Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is hoping that the threats made by residents in some parts of the North West province will not materialise during the May General elections.

Residents have threatened to bar the IEC from entering their villages to conduct its duties, while some threatened to withhold their votes.

They accused the government of failing to provide them with basic services.

The IEC’s Provincial Electoral Officer Tumelontle Thiba says they have had meetings with stakeholders and are hoping for the best.

“We hope that we have spoken with our stakeholders sufficiently to try and convince them that they should always remember that the country comes first that the spirit of patriotism needs to be re-awakened in all of us so that we can be responsible. We do not foresee any major challenges however given the fact that we still have the protests to this very day, days before the main event. We are concerned but we are hopeful that everything will go according to plan.”
