The Independent Electoral Commission says as it prepares for this year’s general elections, it will ensure that the process of registration and voting is understood.

The IEC will on Wednesday host a national briefing with the agricultural sector comprising worker representatives and farmers’ associations in Benoni on Gauteng’s East Rand.

The objective is to engage the agricultural sector on the IEC’s vision and work, especially ahead of the National and Provincial elections.

IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela says voter-education is key to a successful election.

“The chairperson of the IEC Advocate Pansy Tlakula will be facilitating a signing of the pledge with the farming community in South Africa. The significance is to ensure that farmers understand that we need to engage with their workers, as well as ensuring that whenever we need to utilise facilities or we need to set up infrastracture for registration or for voting, that relationship is understood, and also more than anything, there’s cordialness in the way in which we engage with the community.”
