The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says they are confident that more South Africans will register this weekend to vote.

Just over 24 million South Africans have so far registered to vote. IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela says the figure represents 77% of the estimated voting age population of 31 million.

IEC deputy Chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo says: “We obviously are eager that we get more people on the voters roll because as we have indicated, it is the wish of the commission that by the time the president proclaims election date that we will have 25 million on the voter’s roll – as at today, we have 24.1 million people registered with us.”

More than 22 000 voting stations will be open on Saturday and Sunday for final voter registrations.
