IEC concerned about political violence ahead of local government elections in SA

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it remains concerned about political violence in the build-up to the local government elections next week.

Elections are set to take place on 1 November in South Africa.

IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Mawethu Mosery explains the multi-pronged approach they have adopted to help deal with political violence.

“We are concerned with violence. We are concerned when the violence ends up in the taking of lives of would-be candidates or would-be voters in the campaign activities of political parties. It is of serious concern, but also, when violence is used to create fear in a community so that voters are reluctant to go out and vote,” says Mosery.
