IEC clears voter registration confusion

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Independent Electoral Commission has cleared the confusion over the voter registration window period. While the 8 and 9 voter registration weekend is widely publicised as the last chance to register to vote, IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, has pointed out that even after the weekend, citizens will still be able to register at their local municipal offices.

Speaking to SABC Digital News on Wednesday, Mamabolo has clarified: “Our legal position is that this weekend is the last opportunity where we will open the voting stations for people to register. After that there won’t be another opportunity where we will open our 22 000 voting stations for people to register. But until the president proclaims the election date people can still visit their local municipal offices to register.”

Proclamation can happen any time after the 9th and until 5pm on the day of the proclamation citizens can register to vote at their local municipal offices.

Meanwhile, Mamabolo says it’s all systems go for the last round of its voter registration drive this weekend. He has urged people, particularly the country’s youth, to take advantage of the second round of the voters’ registration exercise.

“We want to urge those South Africans that have not registered to take advantage of the opportunity that we are creating and go register. As I’ve indicated there won’t be any other registration this is the last one.”
