Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Judicial Service Commission has started with the interviews to fill the position of Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson.

The first candidate to take the hot seat is Justice Bekebeke. He is currently the Northern Cape Government Director-General.

Bekebeke has stressed the importance of ethical leadership and wants the IEC to be independent to ensure free and fair elections in the country.

He says, “The issue of influence or wrong interpretation of the law detracts from the credibility of the IEC at the end of the day. It might be one mistake that one individual has made but at the end of the day, that affects the whole IEC. If there can be a lack of independence, if there is a perception of bias that also I can assume is going to be a threat to the IEC.”
