‘Icasa chairperson must be removed’

Political parties in Parliament’s Communications Portfolio Committee are unanimous in wanting to remove Independent Communications Authority of South Africa(ICASA) Chairperson Rubben Mohlaloga.

The National Assembly will on Tuesday consider the committee’s report calling for Mohlaloga to lose his post.

The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court found him guilty of fraud and money laundering earlier this year.

Mohlaloga is appealing the ruling.

He allegedly committed the offences when he was still with the Land Bank.

ANC Whip in the Committee Lerumo Kalako says: “Our position as the ANC is that he must actually be removed. We have even asked the Minister to immediately set in the processes for him to be removed as a chairperson, and to be removed as a councillor, so that we don’t have problems going forward.”

“We don’t want to wait for the court judgement on the appeal. The sentence is there, the court judgement is there. We want a clean slate and a good image of ICASA,” says Kalako.

Meanwhile, DA Member of the committee Phumzile van Damme is in full agreement.

“In terms of the act, if a person is found guilty of a crime as Mr Mohlaloga has, he cannot serve on the ICASA council and we look forward to supporting the report which will remove him from ICASA. We believe that people who serve on the boards of state owned entities and constitutional bodies must be above reproach,” says van Damme.
