Suspended Head of the Gauteng Health Department Dr Barney Selebano has told the Life Esidimeni hearings in Johannesburg that he was scared to stand up to then MEC Qedani Mahlangu.
Selebano says he agreed with Molefi Mosenogi – who led the project to transfer the mentally-ill patients to ill-equipped and unlicensed NGOs – that the move could have dire consequences.
Mosenogi wrote to the MEC requesting a minimum of six months’ extension for the project saying it could not be carried out in three months.
He later voiced his concerns at a departmental meeting.
Selebano has described Mahlangu’s response to Mosenogi’s concerns as shocking.
