Egyptians march against Trump’s decision on Jerusalem

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hundreds of people rallied against the United States President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

They demand that Jerusalem be recognized as a Palestinian capital.

“All those believe in a unified Arab consciousness, we reject Trump’s insult. We reject this ignorance of historic rights, of international law and of the rights of Palestinian people,” said Hamdien Sabahy, a politician.

“The Arab people will not surrender. Some leaders have failed us by remaining silent. If our leaders hand over Jerusalem we will protest. The Palestinian issue remains a priority for us,” said a female protester.

On Friday, mosques across the country dedicated prayers to Jerusalem.

At the Grand Mosque of Al Azhar, the world’s biggest university of Islamic studies, Asian and African students joined Egyptians to defend a city they view as the Palestinian capital.

“This is a conflict about existence not a conflict about borders. We will fight for every inch of this land,” said a male protester.

“People are angry, the American decision is void even European countries did not recognize it,” said another protester.

It’s a temporary lift to the protest ban that Egypt has imposed. It’s a rare opportunity for the people to express themselves.

And they are saying no to any manipulation regarding Jerusalem.

It shall remain an Arab and a Palestinian city and if anyone, either Trump, American or any other country tries to change that fact, they will unleash their rage in the streets of the Islamic world, said Hamdien Sabahy, the politician.
