Commonly referred to as Yoga Day, it is celebrated annually on 21 June since its declaration in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly.

Hundreds of people from all walks of life have gathered at the Durban Amphitheatre on the beachfront to participate in International Day of Yoga celebrations.

Commonly referred to as Yoga Day, it is celebrated annually on 21 June since its declaration in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly.

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. With the fast-paced, stressful lives that most people experience in developed and developing countries, the pursuit for alternate healing and therapy for non-communicable diseases has become imperative.

A big fan of the day is Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader leader, Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who has given the event a miss.

Among the dignitaries at the Yoga Day event in Durban were the Provincial Treasury MEC, Ravi Pillay, and the newly appointed acting eThekwini Acting Mayor Fawzia Peer.

The theme for 2019 International Yoga Day is Climate Action.
