More than hundred swim from Robben Island to Cape Town in Freedom Swim

The event has been held to mark Nelson Mandela's centenary birthday celebrations.

One hundred and fifty swimmers have taken part in the Freedom Swim from Robben Island to Blaauwberg in Cape Town.

The event has been held to mark Nelson Mandela’s centenary birthday celebrations.

It is also a celebration of Freedom Day next week.

Swimmers from all over the world braved the icy Atlantic waters for the extreme event.

Organiser Ram Barkai says, “This is the freedom swim from Robben island to big bay to celebrate Freedom Day which is one week from now and this year is very special because its Mandela’ 100 year celebration to celebrate Mandela’s freedom and South Africa’s freedom.”
