As the country celebrates Human Rights month, Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi says in order for the country to promote human rights, it becomes critical to establish strong human rights institutions.
On Wednesday the nation commemorated 1960 Sharpeville Massacre, where black people were gunned down in cold blood by the apartheid police for standing up for their rights, peacefully protesting against pass laws.
Ngcukaitobi says the main problem has been institutions’ failures.
“It seems to me that we have to go back to the institutions that we set up for the protection of Human Rights and ask the questions whether those institutions are ideally set for the protection of human rights,” says Ngcukaitobi.
