Human Rights for all or not?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

On 21 March 1960 more than 60 people lost their lives in Sharpeville, Johannesburg, protesting against the Apartheid government. During the following years more people made the same sacrifice.

In 1994 the Constitution of South Africa was ratified by Nelson Mandela in Sharpeville and the decision was made to set aside 21 March as a day to remember those lives lost during the Sharpeville Massacre and also to acknowledge our rights as citizens of South Africa.

This year’s theme for Human Rights Day is: “Celebrating the Freedom Charter, Enjoying Equal Human Rights for All”. But the question remains whether all South Africans are afforded equal human rights.
