The family of the late jazz music legend and activist Hugh Masekela have expressed gratitude for the condolence messages and support they have been receiving during their time of mourning.

Masekela died on Tuesday after a long battle with Prostate Cancer. He was 79 years old.

Masekela’s son Sal acknowledged the outpouring of condolences, both locally and internationally, saying that each kind word and sweet message was greatly appreciated.

The 79-year-old musician died while surrounded by his family.

Briefing the media in Johannesburg, Masekela’s family says the jazz legend will be buried at a private ceremony which will be closed to the public.

However, events are planned over the course of next week for the public to, not only pay their last respects, but to also celebrate his life.

A commemoration of Bra Hugh’s life will take place on Friday in Alexandra township where Masekela began his musical journey.

On 28 January, a musical memorial will take place featuring a range of artists he collaborated with, influenced and loved.
