How the provinces voted

Reading Time: < 1 minute

On 16 December, the 53rd national elective conference of the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) will get underway at Mangaung. The national Conference is held every five years.

At least 90% of the voting delegates at the national Conference are sourced from ANC branches in ‘good standing’.The remainder 10% of voting delegates are allocated by the NEC from among the Provincial Executive Committees, the ANC Youth League, the ANC Women’s League and the Veteran’s League.

Ahead of the national conference, Provincial General Council (PGC) meetings allow provinces to vote for their preferred candidates for the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The Mpumulanga, Western Cape and Limpopo PGC meetings were mired in tension, as delegates fought over who to nominate.

The battle for President has been the most contested, with pro-Zuma and pro-Motlanthe supporters. Gauteng, Limopopo and the Western Cape have thrown their weight behind the current Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, but current President Jacob Zuma has 65% of the votes.
