The Moerane commission that has been investigating politically related killings in KwaZulu-Natal, continues with its sitting in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.

A delegation from a group working for the rights of hostel dwellers, uBunye Bamahostela is expected to testify.

On Wednesday, the commission heard that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s Ethics Manager Amar Maharaj could face disciplinary action for giving false information before the Commission.

This was according to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (Ipid) National Head of Investigations Matthews Sesoko, who has repeatedly told the commission that he found it surprising that Maharaj decided to discredit the Ipid’s current leadership.

The Moerane commission of inquiry began to focus on the political killings in KwaZulu-Natal back in 2011.

The South African Local Government Association has expressed its concern that KwaZulu-Natal has lost many experienced councillors because of violence and intimidation.
