The Jewish Board of Deputies has weighed in on the matter after two pupils at the Herzlia Middle School in Cape Town face disciplinary action for kneeling during the singing of the Israeli anthem during a school ceremony.
The two learners were protesting against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and occupation of Palestinian land.
The Jewish Board of Deputies was reacting after struggle stalwart and social rights activist, Ronnie Kasrils, told the congregation of the Claremont Main Road Mosque on Friday that the school had shown contempt for open-mindedness.
Kasrils says the Herzlia Middle School in Cape Town is wrong for taking issue with two Grade Nine learners for kneeling during the signing of the Israeli anthem.
“Students there cannot ignore what Isreal is doing. The extreme brutality that we all know of which is so shameful, utterly shameful… and if you are a thinking young Jew, you are not going to be immune from such events we see on our TV screens.”
He has also called on government to cut all economic and diplomatic ties with Israel.
Board spokesperson, Rael Kaimowitz believes the school dealt with the matter correctly.
“We feel that they’ve taken the correct approach of taking their focus inward onto the school. You know they have been around for eight years in our community as an educational institution, and as the Board we are very confident that they will constructively work through this topic together with pupils the teachers and the parent body.”

This is an extremely brave thing for them to do in their political circumstances. Seeing through their institutional indoctrination for these young people is inspiring and gives me hope for Israel.
