Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa is expected to proclaim the election date on Friday.
He says they are working closely with the Home Affairs Department and Law enforcement in preparation for the local government elections and that inter-ministerial meetings are continuously being held to ensure a violence-free campaigning environment as political tensions rise.
With just hours left before the online registration closes, Hlabisa has urged unregistered citizens to heed the final call.
“This will be my last clarion call before the voters’ roll closes at midnight tonight. To all the people of South Africa, young and old, who have not checked their status on the IEC website or visited the IEC offices, you can do so today before the offices close. People must not wait for the last moment, especially not our youth.”
Hlabisa commented further after an ANC councillor was gunned down in eThekwini yesterday while assisting people in his office. “The SAPS and all other law enforcement agencies are ready to ensure that we create an environment that is going to be free, open, and ensure the safety of our people. It is very sad what happened yesterday. One of our public representatives was shot in broad daylight in eThekwini. I really want to convey my condolences and want to appeal to whoever has an issue with anyone. Killing a person does not solve a problem.”
