South Africa cannot afford complacency in the fight against HIV/AIDS. New infections are still very high among teenage girls between 14 and 24.
Little is being done to curb this problem. HIV researchers made the comments ahead of an Aids conference in Durban on Tuesday.
Only 2.7 million people are now on ARV treatment
An estimated 35 million of the world’s population live with HIV, of this 6.3 million are South Africans.
But only 2.7 million people are now on ARV treatment in the post-Mbeki administration.
Fewer people are dying from Aids-related illnesses. Mother to child transmissions has decreased significantly. But the high number of new infections among girls is rising.
A cure for Aids is still being researched but a vaccine is a distinct possibility, a trial in Thailand has yielded good results.
The Aids conference starting in Durban on Tuesday and will look at South Africa’s contribution to the fight against the disease.
