People came from all over the country to witness a historic gathering. The #GcwalisaiMabhida event was the first ever Maskandi concert to be attended by over 30 000 fans.

A concept brought to life by multi-award winning Maskandi musician Khuzani Mpungose, the concert sought to uplift the status of this genre of music and encourage unity among artists.

Mpungose says that they made history. “There will never be a day like the 30th of March in my entire life. History has been made and this is the rebirth of Maskandi.”

With exhilarating performances, supporters were left wanting more.

“It’s good to see that even though we support different artists there’s peace and we respect each other. It goes to show that this concert was a success.”

“This concert has left us overjoyed because it represents who we are and I liked how it was inclusive of all Maskandi supporters.”

Legendary Maskandi musician, Ihhashi Elimhlophe, hailed the event as a historic one.

“It is good to see that our children have taken the baton and did things we’ve never done. What we witnessed here is history and it is guaranteed to grow.”

Maskandi is the second best-selling music genre after gospel in the country. The country’s first citizen President Cyril Ramaphosa was also in attendance. He used the occasion to remind music lover to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

Arts and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa called for unity among the supporters of Maskandi.

“Last year we had a workshop with the Maskandi musicians and we explained to them that they need to come together, come together and respect one another so that other people can respect them and that’s what they are doing.”

The genre set to continue making history. Mpungose says he now wants to take this genre of music to the world.
