‘High risk of COVID-19 resurgence if lockdown regulations are not balanced’

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Professor Mosa Moshabela has warned of a high risk of resurgence in new coronavirus infections if lockdown regulations are not balanced.

The Delta variant was driving the third wave of infections in the country.

On Sunday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that all gatherings would be limited to a maximum of 250 people indoors and 500 people outdoors.

In case the venue is too small to accommodate these numbers with appropriate social distancing, no more than 50% of the venue’s capacity may be used.

This includes religious services, political events and social gatherings, restaurants, bars, taverns and similar places.

Professor Moshabela says this is extremely worrying.
