Police Minister, Bheki Cele says although no serious crimes have been reported on the Durban beachfront since start of the festive season, a high police presence will persist.

After interacting with holiday makers along Durban’s north beach, Cele also noted his concerns over motorists’ behaviour on the roads this festive season. He’s urged people to drive with caution.

“In terms of the behaviour, all the places of entertainment were on the comfort zone. One thing that puts us on the back foot are the accidents on the road, it does look bad. Even so, it is not much of the drunk drivers – it is the misbehaviour, fatigue and people overtaking when they are not supposed to.”

Beachgoers have commended the Police Ministry for the high police presence, and have urged it to maintain the high level of security throughout the year.

“This is our first time, I think we did enjoy it so much,” says a beachgoer.

“I don’t see any suspicious people around. We can even leave our stuff and go and it is quite safe,” adds another beachgoer.

“There was a lot of police presence coming into town, we come down here very often or every weekend and there was more than we are used to, but I wish it was more all the time – 365 days a year,” says another beachgoer.
