High pedestrian deaths worry RTMC

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says it’s concerned about the high number of pedestrian deaths since the start of the festive season.

Many of the country’s roads saw seen huge volumes of traffic at the weekend as holiday-makers headed to their way to their various destinations around country.

Statistics have not yet been released, but the RTMC’s Simon Zwane says vehicles have knocked down many pedestrians since the beginning of December.

“We are concerned about the high number of pedestrian fatalities and our advice to pedestrians is to please avoid busy roads after drinking alcohol, high number of people knocked by vehicles are found to be to have been drinking alcohol. We also advising motorists to be careful when driving around in residential areas that there are many people walking and we must be on the lookout to avoid these unnecessary accidents.”
