Attorney and former co-chairperson of the Law Society of South Africa Krish Govender says he expects the Pietermaritzburg High Court to grant former president Jacob Zuma’s urgent application for a stay of arrest.

This is pending Zuma’s application for a rescission of his 15-month prison sentence, in the Constitutional Court next week.

Last week, the Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma for contempt of court.

Former President Jacob Zuma contempt case judgment:

Govender says he believes that Zuma has left the Constitutional Court with no other option.

“Technically what is being suggested is that the application to stay the warrant should have been brought before the same court that issued the warrant. One would expect some sort of maybe latitude that the court may grant the applicant to say it makes sense that we have got an application that’s going to be heard by the ConCourt- we understand and we are quite happy, we can grant the order,” adds Govender.

Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court will hear Zuma’s rescission application on Monday, July 12.

Zuma says he will not hand himself over to prison authorities in the meantime.
