City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has resigned from Democratic Alliance (DA) as the Mayor of Johannesburg.

It follows the election of Helen Zille as the party’s Federal Council Chairperson on Sunday. Mashaba has previously indicated that he would call it quits, should – what he calls – the ‘right wing aligned DA faction’ win.

Mashaba took office as the Johannesburg Mayor in 2016. Speaking during a media briefing in Johannesburg, Mashaba says he is deeply concerned about the politics of the DA.
