Heritage Day an opportunity for all cultures: FFPlus

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Heritage Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the rich variety of cultures and heritage in South Africa, the FFPlus said on Tuesday.

“If the day is celebrated in the right way, it will lead to greater respect and understanding of each other,” Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Mulder said in a statement.

“Through that, the diversity of South Africa can be a positive asset and not a burden and a source of conflict,” he said.

“If some communities feel that their heritage, history and heroes are placed under pressure, are less worthy or are ignored the opposite has been reached.”

Mulder was speaking at a Heritage Day celebration at Aardklop, in Potchefstroom, North West.

He said there was only one answer to the problem and that was to respect each other’s cultures and heritage, and to make space for one another’s heroes.

The challenge for South Africans was to find a win-win solution to situations where there were differences between communities
about how their cultures should be recognised, said Mulder.
