The Department of Health has conceded that there is confusion around the kind of messages that are being sent out to encourage people to be vaccinated.
On Sunday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated that vaccinated people were less likely to become severely ill or die from COVID-19-related complications.
He addressed the nation on the country’s efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic – as the country records a decline in new coronavirus cases in recent weeks.
The Department’s acting Director-General Dr Nicholas Crisp says they are seeking ways of addressing the problem of sending out mixed messages.

Ramaphosa on vaccinated people:
President Ramaphosa has reiterated that vaccinated people are less likely to become severely ill or die from COVID-19-related complications.
Ramaphosa announced that South Africa has been moved to lockdown level 2.
“We know that a vaccinated person can still be infected and pass on the virus to others but what we are seeing is that very few persons who are vaccinated against COVID-19 are becoming severely ill with the disease, and very few are ending up in ICU or needing ventilation. People who are vaccinated against COVID-19 are far less likely to die of the disease.”
