Health Department getting closer to vaccination target

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Health Department is edging closer to government’s target to vaccinate 300 000 people every day, with the latest data showing that almost 267 000 people were given a jab in the most recent 24-hour reporting period.

This comes as people over the age of 18 flock to vaccination centres across the country.

The vaccines are considered safe and highly effective in preventing severe illness and even death from COVID 19.

The department says more than 11 million vaccines have been administered. Over five million adults are now fully vaccinated in South Africa.

Fourth wave

On Monday, renowned epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim emphasised the importance of South Africa reaching a high vaccination rate, saying it will help prevent high levels of fatalities during a fourth wave of infections.

Professor Karim says countries that have high vaccination rates are able to better withstand the impact of a fourth wave.
