Hawks to probe alleged corruption at eThekwini municipality

The Hawks are investigating allegations of corruption and maladministration at the eThekwini municipality around Durban.

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi has not confirmed allegations by a Sunday newspaper that the unit is specifically investigating eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede.

Mulaudzi says they will not be identifying the councillors and the service providers who are under investigation.

“There is an investigation that we are busy with at the eThekwini municipality. It involves councillors and service providers. There are allegations of corruption and maladministration that have been brought to our attention. However, we cannot get into the details of who we are looking at. The report that was printed today, a weekly newspaper does not confirm what we are investigating, but the fact of the matter is that there is that investigation in that eThekwini municipality.”
