Hawks confirm raid at Gupta compound

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Hawks have confirmed an early morning raid at the Gupta compound in Saxonwold North of Johannesburg.

The streets surrounding the compound have been closed to traffic.

It’s understood that the operation is part of a larger investigation by the Hawks into alleged state capture.

The controversial family have been implicated in wide-ranging allegations of corruption.

The family’s also been implicated in the theft of millions of rand from the Estina Dairy Project.

The North West Health Department has meanwhile admitted to paying a Gupta-linked company a R30-million advance and has further made available R108-million for a single vehicle mobile clinic.

Leaks of the Gupta emails revealed that costs spread-sheets were sent to Tony Gupta, before the company was awarded various contracts months later.

On Monday, Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane confirmed that Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Des van Rooyen, lied to parliament when he denied visiting the Gupta’s compound in the run-up to his appointment as Finance Minister.

Mkhwebane has found that van Rooyen deliberately made a misleading statement to the National Assembly.

She has recommended that the President act against van Rooyen within 30 days and that the report is tabled in the National Assembly within 14 days of the President receiving the report.
