Hawks arrest 6 people for alleged tender irregularities

The Hawks have arrested six people for their alleged involvement in tender irregularities at the Amajuba district municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The suspects appeared briefly at the Durban Commercial Crimes Court.

Provincial Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says the suspects were arrested for fraud and corruption estimated at more than R13 million.

“Hawks members from serious corruption investigation have arrested six suspects for fraud and corruption that is related to tender procurement at Amajuba district, these criminal activities took place in 2012 where they illegally procure the tenders without following the proper channels.”

Mhlongo says the municipality ordered the investigation following a 2012 audit.

“The investigation started after the municipality manager did a forensic audit of Amajuba municipality and it was noticed that some of the tenders were awarded and the processes were not followed and the amount that is followed is R13 million and it is the mandate of the Hawks to investigate such serious corruption that involve the municipality and the suppliers.”
