The presidency on Sunday called on South Africans to have their say about what should be included in President Jacob Zuma’s state-of-the-nation address (Sona) scheduled for later this month.
“The president invites inputs and suggestions through social media on issues people consider important for their well-being and those of their communities that should be included in the speech,” the presidency said in a statement.
Comments could be submitted on Twitter PresidencyZa or on the Facebook page for the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa.
Submissions would be accepted from Sunday until next week Friday.
The Presidency declared that preparations were “at an advanced stage” for the speech that will be delivered by Zuma in Parliament on February 12.
“The Sona will outline progress made in the past year, the outstanding work that still needs to be done and the priorities of the 2015/2016 financial year.”
Zuma would also convene a Cabinet lekgotla from February 3-5 in Pretoria in order to review last year and discuss priorities going forward.
Some controversy has already arisen over the upcoming Sona, after opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters vowed to disrupt the speech unless a special sitting of the National Assembly was scheduled for Zuma to answer questions regarding upgrades to his private Nkandla home.
Speaker Baleka Mbete has since announced that Zuma would answer questions in the National Assembly in March.
Meanwhile, most recently, the party said that they would go nude in the National Assembly if they were to be barred from wearing their red overalls, gumboots and maid uniforms.
Their threat to go au naturel follows efforts by Parliament to toughen regulations related to MPs dress code.
“We are not going to dress like colonial masters… I am wearing an overall, it’s clean and I am not smelly,” EFF leader Julius Malema told The Star towards the end of last month.
