Half of all by-elections held in SA are in KZN

Fifty percent of the by-elections held nationally since 2011 have been in KwaZulu-Natal. This is what the Moerane Commission probing political killings in KwaZulu-Natal heard on Monday.

The killings of councillors contributed to this number.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says this has had an adverse impact on the country’s fiscal.

IEC’s Mawethu Mosery says: “The fiscal spent in holding repeated by-elections is beyond what we had budgeted for and planned for as the electoral commission. By way of indication, we estimate one by-election to be in the region of R120 000 to about R140 000. This depends on the number of voting districts and voters in that ward and also communities affected within that ward boundary.”

The commission is winding down its work and is expected to present a report to the premier of the province Willies Mchunu by the end of March.
